There was a good post on DHP a month or so back inquiring about
"Uptempo dub/reggae with 4/4 riddim??"

FK offered up a few uptempo titles to check:

Quote:

Sorry for not answering, I am currently on the road. in DUB..lin!

Anyway, there's a bucketload of that stuff...

Some titles would only come back to me when I see the album sleeves, but there's defintely

- "Horn Of Africa" (forgot the artist)
- Lots and Lots of Jah Shaka 12" have that beat, like "Warriors Advance".."Warriors Charge", notoriously hard to get as he doesn't re-press much.
- "Movie Show Dub" Junior Delahaye (Wackie's) re-issued!
- A lot of the records made by 'Disciples' (Russ Disciple)
- "Bloodsuckers Dub" Pablo Gad
- "Warmonger's Dub" Barry Isaacs (stunning!)
- "Buffalo Soldiers" Bob Marley (the Tuff Gong Dubs)

..then those that are almost Reggae-Disco

- "Light Of Africa" Saba (Honest John's)
- "One People" (version) Calvin Cameron (Honest John's)
- "Coconut Head" Wareika Hill (Honest John's)
- "Sealing Dub" Skatalites (Deep Space Vol 1 Compilation)
-"Formula One Dub" Daddae Harvey (this one is almost Ska, really cool!)

There are definitely many, many more. This should get you started.

FK

I thought this was a good thread for its focus on reggae and dub that can easily sit alongside a deephouse set with the 120 BPM or so tempo.

I mean I am feeling the Beat Pharmacy sound (check remix of "Jump" on Turntables on The Hudson vol. 6 LP - v. good) and would like to amass a good hours worth of that kind of material to warm up my deephouse sets.

So I was checking records on Juno and clicking on sound bytes that are outside my usual, when I hit this wicked steppers dub by UK's Gussie P Roots Crew: Who Dub? (Gussie P/Recession Beater, UK 2002) The thunder cracks, the snares echo and 'damn', I'm thinking 'there's more excitement in this 7" dub than on most of the house records I bought this year'. I'm checking the tempo and thinking, 'okay, this is gonna set it off!' I buy two copies.

Nerious Joseph/Gussie P Roots Crew 7" Juno has the sound clips and titles mixed up on their page on this one.

I look up the DHP thread thinking, I need some more of this... I check FK's list and try a few titles. I settle on the hotly tipped Barry Issac: Warmongers / Warmongers dub (Reggae On Top, UK 2006) and it is also uptempo, hot production and the vocal is good and thematically on point. Another winner! I'm thinking 'Is there more where this came from?'

Barry Issac - Warmongers 7"

So... I now have two reggae steppers 7" singles, both killer, and I need some more. FK, you play this stuff week in and week out, when you find a new steppers cut, let us know here on the dub forum. Anyone else, please share the knowledge on the uptempo reggae goodness.

One thing I did find while doing a bit of searching is that both Gussie P. and Barry Issac are UK producers (as is Jah Shaka who does a lot of steppers cuts) and it seems a lot of these uptempo sides are out of the UK - something to watch for, perhaps.

thanks for this.

steppers is a british form of reggae as far as i'm aware. there's lots of 10"s out there from small crews. the scene really originated in the early to mid 80s with the stuff people like shaka played. i don't really keep up with it, but try loin vibes website as well - www.lionvibes.co.uk

however, i would recommed getting other stuff than 120bpm. one groove can get boring...
