Older music? For a beginner you can't go wrong with the Ethiopique series.

The old and new stuff from Mulatu Astatke is always really good.

I think Mulatu Astatke is Ethiopian and he's had a couple of cracking releases out on Strut recently.

Chadiii also recommended him above too. I downloaded New York-Addis-London, but haven't moved it out of my "files to prepare" folder and given it a real listen.

This reminds me, by the way, of Brendon killing it at Deep Space one time with that track of his from Broken Flowers.
