Any recommendations? FK, what do you have?

Need something to protect in bad acoustic situations.

I got myself a pair of UE-18 Pro Custom In-ears - with the optional Ambient feature. I went for these ears plugs for 2 reasons, to protect my hearing (which unfortunately was damages from long jam sessions 10-12 years ago) and avoiding that my tinnitus gets worse AND to have a really great in ears system that I can use as reference/monitoring in situations where the monitor situation is not good.

The Ambient feature is really neat since I can choose different filters (just like in custom musician earplugs) 6 - 10 - 15 and 25. This way I can actually use the inhouse monitor system while keeping the in-ears system in.

Warning! DO NOT EVER plug the in-ears into the mixer without checking levels first (that goes for listening on the MAC output as well) - I blew my left channel bass 2 months ago Sad

since the headphone output on the mac was turned up high. Lucky for me I didnt have them in my ears.

On a last note. I spoke to one the the main engineers over at Lavry (known for their DA-AD converters) and he promised to get me in touch with someone who can build a mini limiter to avoid problems like loud peaks when changing channels (CUEing on the mixer) and situations where you simply just screw up by plugging into a loud headphone output after another DJ. Unfortunately I haven't heard from him yet. Maybe someone else here on the forum knows somebody who can build this ? Size is obviously important...

I reckon the custom UE's are too pricey until I've tried some others out and sold myself on the experience of DJing w/ them. Ambient feature sounds very interesting!

Also, thanks for the level-check warning: I can see how blowing out your ears or mmonitors would be a risk!

Been using the Shure E530 for a while, and they are great with the triple-flange ear pieces (not the ones pictured here) as it does the job of earplugs and significantly cuts down outside noise so I can work at very low levels, much lower than it would be with headphones.

I used the 530 as well before the UE18 pro's... the 530s are great and are very easy to get in and out of the ears (if you find the right sized fitting, I have medium in one ear and small in the other for some strange reason).

I actually started playing with in-ear due to the fact that I like my Stetson Smile

and it's hard to fit a pair of Sennheisers over that. Smile

Anyway - If you call up EU, talk to them and them will probably give you a good discount (they gave me 20% off). You could also try Jerry Harvey's in-ears... http://www.jhaudio.com/

He's a little cheaper I think, and is (i believe) the guy who actually started Ultimate Ears. Anyway - I gotta say - the EU-18 are awesome... just a blessing putting them in the ears. Custom fit and really nicely balanced sound.

As for limiting - I actually bought a Shure in-ear system - (got it for 300$ on ebay, due to the fact that it's using illegal frequencies... schyyyy), in has built in limiter but there is way too much hiss in the system IMO. So i'm selling it again and putting the money towards a custom built limiter. Just need to find that engineer!!!!!

only 0.44 lb. I wonder how bad the hiss (noise level) is, how much noise it adds by doubling amps.

i've been happily loyal to the Sennheiser HD25s for just on 10 years now. Haven't come across a headphone to better it. Its lightweight, great sounding and generally very easy on the ears.
i guess that within the scope of this discussion i'll be deemed old school...
in-ear phones usually irritates me generally
