i had a big long post, but i quashed it as it kind of played itself out.

you can't ignore the politics, the cultural significance, the people. as you said, we don't live in a vacuum with our music.

yes, DC is different than the north. NYC in particular.

anyway,

it seems as though parents of children with mixed heritage, are extra invested in pushing the envelope on all the old paradigms. ..the implication/hope being that, among other things, there will be a better, at least more evolved world out there in whichour kids can find some peace, and make it on their own. I dunno. lost the power of articulation about an hour ago. Fighting for anything less than world peace (each in our own little way), seems to be aiming your shot too low.

Whoa, just read the DHP threads...

Can't help but feel like I'm witnessing some important moment in art history. One side doesn’t feel the new approach (this view manifests itself in sundry technicalities, definitions, etc...), the other does feel it. Egos clash for a bit but ultimately things move on and new things become the new canon.

The arguements by both sides in the DHP thread are very similar to a heated debate I had with an old-school dude about using drum machines and samplers as instruments. The debate was futile. Drum Machines are outside of the canon that he adopted at some point in his relationship with music.

I've also got to speculate on the nature of this canonizing? Do a lot of people end up feeling that the life-space (not the 'world') that they inhabited in their 20-30th years (or any given chunk of their youth) was superior in culture, integrity, and community that anything to come after them?

Everyone has their 'wow' moment right? At some point in your young life a new sound or something just knocks you off your feet in a way that nothing ever has and nothing ever will again. Or maybe you'll be special and continue to have 'wow' moments as brilliant as the first while others start to stiffen.

I know that Deep Space is something special in its time and place but will I be telling non-Deep Space people in 20 years that they are doing it all wrong? I hope not. If house and hip hop can stand as proof, kids will continue to mess around and break the rules of older canons and will give birth to new and wonderful cultures.

And on making eclectic music absolutely work as a mixer and deconstructer rather than just a programmer of widely varied records,,,I've heard dj's from all continents,,,on neutral ground(Japan)
and no one tops FK and Spinna,,,two colour blind selectors as far as I can tell
,and these two are inspiring the next generation,,,(at least me and my peeps)

Hello Kelvin,

Thank you for those very valuable comments you just made.

You meant to say "SOME of the crowds in the UK", as I am sure that you are acutely conscious that they are so many different crowds and scenes in London, as different from each other as can ever be.

There are things that play themselves out differently when just being a guest DJ, as opposed to having a residency.

Undoubtedly, part of where my style comes from still places some value in the real rush that a great mix can accomplish once in a while, as well as a natural flow which accomodates dancing for long stretches.

It's like my style of vegetarianism. I don't overdo it. Still eating bits of this and that.

You can certainly check out some of the stuff I do in our Online Mixes Section, where you can get a pretty good taste of what happens on our nights. I love what Ade does any day of the week.. Mr. Green

Stay tuned.

quite a discussion on the dc party... i think the above was lost in much of it...

again, i think it's only positive when people debate the arts and talk about their feelings and motivations. some kid may read all that was written, come to some amazing conclusion from it all, then go and change the world... kinda hokey, but that's how these things happen...

Hi FK,

the way i phrased my arguament could definately have been improved on.

You're right in that there are clubs in the UK that are completely unable to deal with the styles and ranges of music we're taliking about. These are largely the bigger one's, as by their nature, the larger the crowd, the more general they are going to be. These are often the clubs that can afford to bring the bigger name Americans over, and in order to do their job they have to try and please a majority of people in the audience. My musical tastes don't really reflect those of the typical audience in a 2000 capacity club, so I generally avoid seeing people in these situations

It's the occasions when bigger name American DJ's get to play in smaller, more intimate environments that my issues are with.

You're completely right about the difference between being a guest DJ and a resident, it took me 'till probably the 4th or 5th time I played at Plastic People that I actually began to understand the dynamic of the club in relation to the sound system, the space, the crowd, and realised just how much it as possible to play there. It does seem to me that there are very few promoters and DJ's who are willing to form connections that allow guest DJ's to come over and play often enough to actually grasp what a club and a crowd are about.

With all this taken into account, I've still had many bad experiences as a club promoter booking some of the bigger name American DJ's in terms of the music they've played. After going to lengths to explain to DJ's that they have the opportunity to play music they genuinely feel passionate about, that I'm setting out to create an enviroment where the audience is used to hearing music they don't know, is as diverse as possible and that often challanges and suprises them, I've still had people turn up and play classic house and party hip hop sets. I'm now in a position that there are very few American DJ's that I'll actually book (with the already mentioned exceptions of people such as Recloose and Kenny Dixon), as so few seem to want to take advantage of the possibilities of playing off the wall and dificult records as opposed to whatever they played at Fabric the night before.

I apreciate that so much of it is tied up in the economics of taking big gigs to warrant the time to come over to europe, and the limited amount of music that can be carried on a plane, but I still find it accutely frustrating booking people who make incredibe music, and have fantastic record collections, only to hear them play music that 80% of my crowd could have braught with them from their homes!!

Peace.... Kelvin

Matt (Recloose) is no longer an American or a Detroiter - he is a Kiwi (lives in New Zealand with his wife)...

Very Happy

But at some point in what you do, there has to be a defining moment, where you put your cards on the table and stand for what you believe in.

although I am sure that my attempts are never going to be all that incredible when measured to what some of the New Jacks are going to bring us, or never to equal what some of the Grand Maestros of House™ are doing right now, at least I am certain that they are a sincere expression of my love for all Dance Music, past, present and future.

FK Very Happy

That is very humbling FK, but i just don't buy it. How could "New Jacks" ever measure up to your experience? this just doesn't add up.

Also as sad as it is, there are people who before they even leave the house, already have preconceived notions of what is to be heard and going against that is a sin to thier level of ignorance.

There are people who also feel that their genre of music is superior to the remaining and are commited to supporting just that, leaving no room for anything else. "To each his own" as they say because some people just don't get it.

Thank you FK for this enlightening insight written with your thread. It was a great and fascinating read.
