Hi,

I hope you can excuse me for having absolutely zero experience on these issues.

If you're planning to put together a laptop for mobile DJ packages (and possibly some recording on the move), but you'd prefer it to be as small as possible, what would be the smallest screen size you'd be comfortable using? This may seem like a silly, obvious question, but I'd prefer to take advice from those who are veterans of laptop DJ-ing, as opposed to making a snap decision. I've seen a few conflicting opinions through Google searches and feel advice obtained here will likely be more useful.

Thanks in advance.

I just switched from several generations of 15" Powerbooks/Macbook Pros for Traktor to a Macbook (13.3" screen) and it hasn't really bothered me any. I don't think I could go smaller, though--sometimes I'll open Traktor and start doing some work without putting it into fullscreen mode, and I notice it pretty quickly. Whereas with the Powerbooks, I'd sometimes completely forget to go fullscreen.

I doubt more real estate would be necessary for Serato... Dunno about Ableton.

Though I miss the better oblique visibility of the Pro screen.

Depends on how much time needs to be spent looking at the screen, I guess. Aside from some low-impact status checks, I'm mostly using it for picking tracks from the collection list. Most attention is focused on the controller and the mixer. Ableton may be a different story, though.

Peece,
T. Tauri

15" seems to be a good compromise.

Just came across this little USB 8" add-on LCD screen that can be handy for certain applications, so easy to install and to carry around.

Once the drivers are installed it just behaves like a second screen to the OS, and I could see this being helpful in Ableton Live to keep plug-ins or virtual instruments open while running the sequencer in the main window.

Price is a bit over $140

I've made the same switch in regards to screen size. I really haven't bothered me at all. But, whereas I didn't change my screen layout much around during a set before, I've had to set up my space bar to switch between regular deck view and browser view. Minor change in work flow, but no biggie.

My reason for changing was that I found the 15" to be too big to lug around to anything but gigs. The 13,3" is a bit more practical in that way.

If it's not for a gig, here's something I really recommend: Acer Timeline 1810T with SU7300 processor

It's really more of a netbook, but with (finally enough power to play HD video!) a 1.3 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 4 Gigs of RAM, HDMI out connector, 11.6" LCD screen with 1366 x 768 resolution, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet, Windows 7, digital audio out, webcam, trackpad that supports gestures and all of the other trimmings, a pretty astounding thing to put in your bag at slightly over 1.5 kg, and you can buy three of these for the price of one Macbook Air. Shocked

There's a touch-screen tablet version of it already available. (1820), and these newer models basically put any Atom-based netbooks into the garbage can in terms of usability and speed.

I am actually going to try and install Traktor on it for kicks, just to see what's possible with that small of a screen resolution. It makes for a mighty second little machine.
