I mean, right after 9/11, any radio programmer could figure out that playing "You Dropped A Bomb On Me" might not have been the wisest thing to do, but sort of struggling to understand the motivation behind banning peace-promoting songs like "Imagine" by John Lennon, or "99 Luftballons" by Nena...

One wonders what kind of person would demand this? Was this really an act of 'patriotism' or a clear case of bigoted ignorance? conf44

List of songs deemed inappropriate by Clear Channel following the September 11, 2001 attacks
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of songs purportedly deemed inappropriate by Clear Channel Communications following the September 11, 2001 attacks. In the days following the attacks, many television and radio stations altered normal programming in response to the events. During this period, the rumor spread that Clear Channel and its subsidiaries had established a list of "songs with questionable lyrics" that stations might not want to play after the attacks. This list was distributed by the independent newsletter Hits Daily Double, which is not affiliated with Clear Channel.

Snopes did research on the subject and concluded that the list did exist as a suggestion for radio stations but noted that it was not an outright ban on the songs in question.

The list contains 166 songs, including "all songs" by Rage Against the Machine and songs done by multiple artists (for example "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" by Bob Dylan and the same song by Guns N' Roses). Interestingly, the cover of "Smooth Criminal" by Alien Ant Farm is on the list despite the fact that the original version, sung by Michael Jackson, is not.

Clear Channel denied the existence of such a list in a press release to a radio industry trade publication, Radio Ink, although they had already admitted to distributing it.

The songs are listed alphabetically by artist. The compiled list was the subject of much media attention around the time of its release, as reported by the Northern Territory News, days after the attacks.

CC is so incredibly right-wing, I doubt its execs needed much of an excuse to prevent the play of music performed / composed by people with known political viewpoints that are different to their own.

With CC and Murderous Murdoch controlling upwards of 60% of all public media, there's no such thing as democracy...

Crying or Very sad

Justin

btw - I'm really sorry for this, but some of that list is laughable... The Trammps???? Rolling Eyes

Still, at least it's ok for CC to engender happiness within the nation's teenagers by playing Destiny's Child, telling them that they need to have money and look like J Lo to be anyone Rolling Eyes

This reminds me of a friend who was in a cafe in Soho when he first heard about Princess Diana's death. At that exact moment the jukebox kicked in with "Life in the fast lane"

I know, I shouldn't laugh...

Cat Stevens "Morning Has Broken"

We used to sing that at Junior school in the mornings. What criteria was being used, very odd indeed.
