Hey Everyone,
on March 19 Master tap dancer TAMANGO, Artistic Director of URBAN TAP will join forces with Francois K. for a special night of dub and hoofin.'
We'll be laying down a special tap floor and putting microphones on the floor. The mic's will go directly into Francois' boards, where he will live mix and dub out the tap dancing. He's also bringing along his didjeridoo for a few musical moments.
TAMANGO, in my modest opinion, is the most talented and rhythmically prolific tap dancer in America today. The night after he performs with us, he and his company will open a 2 week run at the Joyce Theater, NYC's best modern dance venue. To have a dancer and choreographer of Tamango's talents, is indeed, an exceptional opportunity and a gift to all of us at Deep Space. I WOULD NOT MISS THIS ONE!
Below is a little info:
Tamango bio
Currently straddling the globe between bases in New York, French Guiana, Senegal and France, Tamango is very much a global rhythm nomad. Luckily however March finds this tap master in a few unique and stunning formats in Manhattan – March 20 to 25 Tamango presents ‘Bay Mo Dilo’ (Give Me Water) his latest celebratory piece at the prestigious Joyce Theater. Based on the rhythms and culture of his Kreyol heritage in French Guiana, this work brings together dancers and musicians from Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Haiti, Jamaica and France. The world premiere was held in October 2006 during the inaugural season of the Miami Performing Arts Center and now at last Bay Mo Dilo arrives in New York. Preceding this NY Debut, Tamango makes a stop at the world acclaimed DEEP SPACE club night at Cielo to improvise with the legendary DJ & producer Francois K.
What the media have to say about previous works of Tamango and Tamango’s Urban Tap :
"Urban Tap finds comrades in any deep rhythmical recitation. You can almost see the diorama of the world speed behind the band." -The Village Voice
The work merges a broad range of free-style dance, including tap, capoeira, African and hip-hop, with a video montage born "live" during each show and the exhilarating sounds of Haitian drumming, world percussion, didjeridoo, cello, trumpet, vocals and more. The Full Cycle ensemble includes some of the most dynamic performers from the underground scene from around the world in a powerful intermingling of cultures and creative styles.
At the helm of this exciting arrangement is Tamango, a revolutionary tap artist who has been described as "one of the great tap artists performing today, a dancer of astonishing speed and lightness whose feet produce a rippling, richly complex cannonade of tap beats. He never ceases to suprise - don't miss him!" -The New York Times
"Astonishing elegance and virtuosity, a blend of swaying curved form, lightning speed and skimming floor rhythms. One is tempted to call him the best dancer of any kind around."
- The New York Times
"...this fusion of international dance and music, psychedelic projections, and poetry that takes the mesmerizing pervasiveness of rhythm as its unifying theme is one of the most stunning theatrical events to stop here."
- The Boston Phoenix
"Like all great dancers, Tamango has a signature style but never ceases to surprise.... The spirit that inhabits his dancing changes a real body into unimagined and elegant shapes." The New York Times |

Last February I came across 2 performers in the Subway, one on drums and the other tapping on a 3' × 3' sheet of wood.
They were good! And it was a sight to behold. I only wish I had video.[/url] _________________ by S. Oolongo |
