His DJ set/performance here (in Minneapolis) tonight was a really strong reminder of a somewhat lost relationship to dance music. It really took me back to what it was like in my youth to be inspired by dance music as something made by bands, singers, musicians... And DJing was a means to express that excitement, rather than it's primary source.

Very kool indeed.

Peece,
T. Tauri

interesting...was he DJ'ing records? what exactly about his performance made you feel that way? That's great news! i've been struggling with the same lost connection to dance music where I live.

Yo Derek,

Way off topic, but it looks like you're Twitter account has been hacked. That, or you've started advertising for dodgy products...

You're probably aware of it, but thought I'd mention it just in case.

It was a combination of DJing records and playing his own music (not sure if it was Ableton or backing tracks he sang and keytar-soloed to), going back and forth between the two.

Mainly, there was a particular and familiar-seeming kind of enthusiasm he showed for the music, including a lot of singing along and stagey gestures --the sort of stuff that I remember doing when I was like 14 years old, just getting into this music, lipsynching and jamming along to New Order or P-Funk in my basement, imagining myself on stage... It took me back to a moment when the musical aspiration I felt was mainly about being in a band or synthpop duo, and DJing didn't really have the allure it came to have--it was something I wanted to do to share my excitement about the songs I dug, not because DJing in and of itself seemed at all glamorous or enticing.

Also, Dam-Funk's trainwreck mixes contributed to that sense of raw enthusiasm and love of the music being more important than DJing as a craft of itself.

Not saying that's how everyone should perform or anything, but it was good to experience him doing so.

Peece,
T. Tauri

I've totally slept on Dam-Funk and I live in Los Angeles.

Gonna have to wake up.

I'm curious what it would sound like on his home turf... The audience here is definitely not ready-made for his sound (tho he did good work converting them). It would be cool to hear how this plays out when a lot of the audience-constructing work has already been done.

I've talked to some DJs(out-of-town) and they say they love to play in Los Angeles because they could never get away with a lot what they play here. Gotta admit I dig the parties that are possible here in LaLa land. Still prefer my parties to go late and not be a meat market.

It was interesting to read that he has decided to put both his Twitter and Facebook accounts into hibernation as of last night.

i forgot about this thread.

i have been following him on twitter, and yes he is still off of it...although he did tweet the other day with a link for a free new track. but he's been silent for sure.

ttauri - cool story. I feel like I get myself too wrapped up in technology and other shit that I sort of feel out of touch with the love for the music; the simplicity of it. Then I just play some records and I remember again. But it's sooo much different than when I started dj'ing (2002). I'm not buying very much vinyl at all these days so listening to new tunes through Traktor at home is not as much of a joyous experience as listening to new wax. But I don't think about that too much. I dig out some old gems.

There is, however, still an active Dam-Funk tumblr:

The more I think about that night, the more I feel like I need to take better care to hear things outside my usual sources, to work towards experiences that express a more populous and richer world.

i felt the same, ttauri, when i saw him open up for Animal Collective a few years back in Prospect Park. i wanted to go roller skating and boogie along blowing bubbles with bubblegum. it was completely refreshing to hear a new and talented young dj playing Garage classics next to obscure boogie jams to a crowd about to hear Black Dice and AC. i've been a fan of Dam Funk's ever since.
