I remember seeing him as part of a rap concert with Black Star, Dead Prez and some others... And what I recall is how effortlessly he commanded the stage and the rap audience's attention. Where the MCs were constanly moving, shouting, mugging, and overemphasizing their messages... making all kinds of effort to demand notice, Gil just sat at his Rhodes, sang with restraint, talked in a mellow conversational tone between songs. And it was totally and utterly enthralling. So much louder in effect, so much more substantial-seeming than all the furious energy of the rap acts surrounding him.

I am most grateful for that experience.

Rest in peace.

Peece,
T. Tauri

He was a very intense, perceptive and lyrical soul who appeared to have ultimately fallen to some of the very demons he was fighting against.

Not often have I thought that the phrase "I became a victim of the very songs I sing" could apply more to someone than it did to him, when thinking of the tragic latter part of his career.

Here is my tribute to GSH. I was lucky enough to see him alive in Berlin recently, very very sad that he had to go.

Enjoy. I posted WAV and MP3 (320) here:
