So this was my first all-François K. event at Deep Space. Masterful (I expected no different). An early peak was some gorgeous vocal, soulful house--lyrics were about the "universe"--anybody got the track info? About 20 min later the sleek current-sounding beats somehow blossomed into 1977's "(Every Time I Turn Around) Back in Love Again" by L.T.D., tastefully extended, and enhanced by a few whooshes and bloops (François? or that other guy in the booth?), and some subtle fussing on the low end if I'm not mistaken.
François brilliantly exploits the possibilities of each tempo. After a single rootsy dub record segued into 20 min of (obligatory?) thrashing dubstep, I postponed my departure to see how (and how soon) he'd get back down to earth--I mean deep space. When it comes to dubstep (OK, "bass music"), I think of tempi in pairs, e.g. 70/140. Landing somewhere near 64/128, over a couple of tracks the 64 part dissolved as he eased us back into unbroken four-on-the-floor and I left happy. Thank you Mr K. _________________ live media subversion
