I didn't like Joan Armatrading's "Drop The Pilot" then, and I don't like it now.

I could really go for a record with a vocal of the old-school house vibe--sort of like Rick Howard on "I Won't Lay Back"--that isn't musically a throwback to old school house.

6/7/10:

A bit grouchy about the press attention to the new LCD Soundsystem album. Conjures up memories of the backpack era of rap music--a scene of largely white fans of a black music form, whose favorite practitioners of said form are also... white (Atmosphere, early Eminem, El-P, DJ Shadow...).

Can't deny the quality of the music, or say it doesn't deserve praise, but I know this is headed someplace I wish it weren't. One of the primary facets of my experience of dance music was a cultural communication among blacks and latinos, that I could share in, but not reroute to my own cultural background.

I was looking at the DJ Charts section of Beatport yesterday, and it was one white guy after another. There's large sectors of the dance world where my dance upbringing isn't even a quaint relic, it's completely disappeared.

Peece,
T. Tauri

80's pop music can be transcendent at certain times.

example: Howard Jones "What is Love?" driving through a serene canyon in southern Colorado on a glorious day yesterday.

Record that really didn't need to be made:

Curtis Mayfield & Ice-T - "Superfly 1990"

(found while boxing up the records before moving)

Really enjoying the compilation Motown Around the World. a collection of foreign-language versions of Motown hits (recorded by the original artists to promote them overseas). Like listening to them with fresh ears thanks to the estrangement of the foreign language vocals. Dang, Motown was amazing!

NPR did a story about the comp here:

Marvin Gaye singing "Wie Schön Das Ist" (How Sweet It Is):

So I was listening to Matias Aquayo's LP (Ay Ay Ay) in the car today, and discovered that, while I like the songs individually (sometimes quite a lot), going through it as an album was a really tiring experience. The whole 'Bobby McFerrin' vocal-sounds thing became overwhelming.

Which brings me to the real discovery of the day: what a success Ladysmith Black Mambazo's albums are... I can pretty easily coast through a whole one with no problems.

Seeing a bunch of critically acclaimed DJ-scene figures suck... OK. But seeing them enjoy sucking... Well that's another thing entirely. Disappointed_anim

Didn't want to hide the playlist, but also wanted to encourage taking the journey without it. Very Happy

Fucking hell, how good is that D'Influence track! Shocked

Makes me miss my garage days. (As in, the time when I bought more than the odd garage track a year, not the time I went to the Garage...)

I really enjoyed that post-Soul II Soul boom of UK soul. I remember how it felt like a pilgrimage to go hear them (Soul II Soul) at The Fridge.

One thing I won't miss about the pregnancy is the bland AOR/country/R&B "Spirit of Womanhood" music in the waiting room when we had medical check-ups. (For me, Des'ree's "You Gotta Be" defines this idea).

Ugggh! Play some Aretha or Chrissie Hynde or Alice Coltrane or somethin'!

In the quest for the perfect DJ mixer, sometimes I dream of really going for it with a full on recording console, like the 8 channel Soundcraft Delta (w. Jim Williams mods), couple of step-up transformers for the TTs...

Or, in still wilder flights of imagination, a Neve Kelso... Smile

Have actually used something similar a couple of times at gigs in the late 90's, except that on that model the master fader was in the middle. Sounded pretty good too...
